While adults in Yingjiang are on alert for more aftershocks, teenagers returned to school on Monday, just days after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region. School teachers are doing all they can to help ease children's memories of the dramatic events.
This is the Chun Hui primary school in Yingjiang county. Inside is Lei Xianruo, a Grade Two primary student. Monday is her first day back in class since the earthquake happened. The lesson she learned is about the story of The Deer and The Rose.
Lei Xianruo, Primary Student in Yingjiang, said, "The deer planted a rose in front of her door, she took good care of the rose, and watched it grow. But when the rose blossomed, the deer hurt its ankle. So she did not see it blossom."
Yingjiang has been hit by a number of earthquakes in recent months. Emergency drills have become part of the curriculum for students and teachers. "When earthquakes happen, get down under a table first, and run to an open area afterward." Lei said. Lei Xianruo said she learned a lot after surviving the earthquake. "I know that when we are in trouble, help is on the way." Lei said.
The education authority has closely examined all school buildings after the earthquake. Apart from 19 seriously damaged ones, 143 primary schools and 15 junior high schools were fit to re-open.
About 6,500 square meters of prefabricated housing has also been set up on campuses to replace potentially unsafe school buildings.
Local authority say for these seriously damaged schools, classes could resume as soon as next week.
