US President Barack Obama has laid a wreath at Ground Zero in memory of the 9/11 victims. The monumental occasion comes four days after US forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The visit marked the first time Obama has visited Ground Zero as president.
Ground Zero was filled with police, tourists and fans waving American flags while chanting.
But during the wreath laying ceremony, President Obama did not make any public comments.
The White House says the President wanted to honor the victims and the first responders, and pay homage to the spirit of unity in America in the wake of the attack.
The president then met privately with about 60 family members from various September 11th organizations.
