Its the latest attack in a city and a country that is no stranger to bombings.
The blasts occurred just after midnight Saturday... near a building that houses several newspaper offices as well as apartments. A large number of people were dining in the nearby restaurants.
Police in Peshawar say the first explosion was relatively small and drew police and rescue workers to the site.
A large explosion rocked the area a few minutes later, causing dozens of deaths and injuries.
Initial reports indicated the second blast was caused by explosives placed in a vehicle and detonated by remote control. Police later suspected it was carried out by a suicide bomber.
The attacks took place across the street from the offices of the top political agent to Khyber Pukhtunkhuwa province, which is part of Pakistan's volatile tribal region.
Peshawar is the capital of the province, and has been repeatedly hit by bombings over the past few years.
