As of Monday, more than 105 people were confirmed killed and another 63 were still missing in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain. Authorities said on Monday more downpours are forecast to batter central and southern China over the next several days.
According to the National Meteorological Center, downpours will hit parts of the southwestern Chongqing Municipality, and the eastern provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang Jiangxi, and southwest Guizhou Province. Torrential rain will also sweep Hunan Province where floods and landslides have caused great damage. Now, Fintan Monaghan will take us to look at a flood hero in Hunan who went back to his village three times to save others during the flooding.
It may seem very peaceful right now, but this village has just suffered the wrath of Mother Nature.
Heavy floods swept away houses, roads, and took away the lives of many.
62-year-old Li Debo has lived in this village his whole life.
This is where his house was and behind it used to be farm land. Now everything is gone.
Before the flood, Li felt something bad was going to happen. He couldn't sleep that night.
Li said, "I got this large candle. This long, this thick. I thought to myself, I won't sleep, I have to watch what's going to happen."
Around 3:20 am, Li's nightmare became reality. Water came up to his window and into his house. He woke his wife and ran out of the house carrying his mother who's more than 90. He was shouting "The flood is here, get out." while knocking on every house he passed by.
After taking his mother to safety on higher ground he went back to the village again.
A local resident said, "We were scared to leave at first. But he came back and shouted the flood is here, you are going to die if you don't get out now. Let's run...So we followed him uphill."
After most of the villagers reached safety, Li found out that a family living in a house near the lake was still missing. He decided right away to go back to the village for the third time.
Flooding had already wreaked havoc by the time he arrived at a hill across from the house. He couldn't get any nearer. The house belonged to a family of five, spanning 3 generations. The young couple had just had a baby.
In the dark, Li was shouting "go upstairs, go to the third floor". But when he held his flash light to the house, it was already completely under water.
4 family members died.
"I feel terrible. I couldn't rescue them."
The disaster destroyed the happy family and many others. The ones who survived are still far from recovery.
The family's dog hasn't left the house since the flood and doesn't quite understand what happened.
He's still waiting for his family to come home.
