March 5th is the official "Learning from Lei Feng Day" when various organizations and institutions call on people to learn from Lei Feng, a cultural icon symbolizing selflessness, modesty and dedication. |
50 years have passed since Lei Feng's death, but his legacy continues on.
"I will help charities and do more voluntary work."
"I want to comfort those who are infected with the HIV virus."
"I will visit nursing homes and provide company for the elderly."
"The Lei Feng spirit should be promoted more. For example, young people can volunteer in underdeveloped areas."
Lei Feng was a solider in the People's Liberation Army. He was known for his altruism and devotion to his country and his people. The Chinese government has launched a nationwide campaign called "Learning from Lei Feng" to encourage this spirit.
Liu Shinan, assistant editor-in-chief, China Daily, said, "When the public heard the report about a toddler who was run over by a van while none of the passers-by made an effort to help the child, they began to question what has happened to our society. They began to miss Lei Feng. They called for the Lei Feng spirit to fill the nation once again."
You don't have to be a hero to do good deeds. Young Chinese are responding by volunteering in public works.
For the past half century, Lei Feng has been a role model for generations of Chinese. The government hopes that the revival of the Lei Feng spirit will inspire people to adopt his selflessness and dedication. And more importantly, citizens will put it into practice and make their communities better places to live.
