At least 40 Somali civilians were killed and 106 others injured in fighting between insurgents and government troops in the Somali capital of Mogadishu since Monday, as Al Jazeera TV reported Tuesday.
"The death toll increased to 40 civilians and 106 others injured since yesterday," the TV said, adding "the fierce conflict between Somali rebels and government forces continues until now."
The fighting broke out on Monday afternoon and continued overnight after fighters from the al-Qaida-inspired Shebab group launched an offensive against government army barracks in several districts of the capital.
