Flood in Thailand claims 28 lives

Flood death toll has jumped to 28 in Thailand as 31 provinces across the country have been affected, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on Sunday.
The country's north, northeast, east and central plains have been ravaged by widespread flood since the monsoon rains caused flash flood on October 10.
According to the report from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, approximately 2.48 million people have been affected and 4,058 square kilometers of farm land damaged by floodwaters.
However, as floodwaters have started to subdue in three eastern provinces of Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trad, 28 provinces currently remain submerged.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday said the Cabinet had approved to increase relief allocation which was originally fixed at 50 million baht (1.67 million U.S. dollars) to over 100 million baht (3.3 million U.S. dollars) in order to help provinces affected by flood.
Bangkok braced itself for flood as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration expected the flood waters to arrive in the capital city on October 26 or 27. More than 200,000 sandbags had already been in place to form temporary embankment along the Chao Phya River, which runs through the capital, in addition to the permanent embankment.
