Yahoo on Monday filed a lawsuit against Facebook, claiming that the social network company has infringed ten of its patents.
The patents in dispute cover areas including advertising, privacy, messaging and social networking, according to court papers posted on the technology blog AllThingsD.
"Facebook's use of Yahoo's patented technologies has increased Facebook's revenue and market share because it does not have to recover the costs or time involved in the development of the technology," Yahoo said in the complaints.
"Yahoo is harmed by Facebook's use of Yahoo's patented technologies in a way that cannot be compensated for by payment of a royalty alone," it added.
Yahoo has asked the court to order Facebook to pay all damages caused by the infringement.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in San Jose in the state of California.
