China hopes the recent Greek election will help stabilize the economic situation in the eurozone, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.
Spokesman Hong Lei made the remark at a regular press briefing while commenting on the preliminary results of Greece's parliamentary election, in which the pro-bailout conservative New Democracy party beat the leftist Syriza party, according to updated exit polls.
Hong said China supports the efforts made by the European Union and the eurozone to deal with the sovereign debt crisis. China is confident in the economies of the EU and the eurozone, he added.
The final poll results are set to be released on Monday.
The New Democracy party has failed to form a government after tough negotiations, thus forcing the Greek people to go to the polls for the second time in six weeks.
