Head of Iran's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has held the U.S. administration and its allies responsible for escalating conflict in Syria.
Speaking at a news conference here on Monday, Alaeddin Boroujerdi stressed that the Syrian army is enormously defending Syria and doesn't need the support of friendly forces.
"The United States and its allies in the region and those who have allocated billions of dollars, sent weapons and military training, are responsible for the killings that have been carried out against the innocent Syrian people," Boroujerdi said.
"Washington, by its double-standard policy, claims falsely that it defends human rights and confronts terrorism, but by its acts, it kills innocents in Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine and Pakistan," he said.
He noted that "a new war on Syria means a fire in the entire region and it would also threaten the U.S. unannounced interests." "The best choice for the Syrians is for President Bashar al- Assad to maintain his presidency until 2014 and to afterwards hold free elections for the Syrians to decide their destiny," Boroujerdi said.
Boroujerdi arrived in Syria on Saturday for talks with a host of Syrian officials, including al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.
Iran has emerged as a main regional ally of the Syrian government, whose officials have repeatedly stressed support for a political solution to end Syrian crisis. Endit
