A Chinese-invested company donated solar energy products to six Namibian regions here on Friday.
Exclusive Solar, a subsidiary of New Era Investment Holdings (Pty) Ltd, initiated the Bright Future Plan to promote the use of solar energy products in Namibia, especially in rural areas of the southwestern African country where electricity is still a problem.
As a part of the plan, the company donated solar panels worth over 700,000 Namibian dollars (about 64,000 U.S. dollars) to six selected regions.
The plan focuses on households with learners who have outstanding academic records and are in desperate need for electricity.
Witnessing the donation ceremony at his office, Namibian Prime Minister Hage Geingob praised the contribution made by the Chinese company, while encouraging Chinese investors to set up joint ventures with local partners in a transparent and legal manner.
Namibia's first solar power project, the 120-million-Namibian- dollar (nearly 11 million dollars) Omburu Solar Park is expected to add 4.5 MW of electricity to its national grid by early next year.
The country currently relies heavily on imported electricity from neighboring countries. Endi
