The race, as part of the "3510" campaign organized by the China Communist Youth League Beijing Committee, lasted for two months from late July to early October. It was supported by the snack food and beverage giant Tingyi Holding Corp., which provided bottled water for all participants.
The campaign, as the number suggests, encourages people to walk when travelling within a distance of 3 kilometers, to cycle when traveling for 5 kilometers and to take public transportation for a trip of 10 kilometers.
The participants, divided into 20 teams, simulated the routes of the world-famous 25,000-li March by China's Red Army between 1934 and 1936. More than 80 percent of them walked at a brisk pace for 10,000 paces each day.
