China allocates food, allowances to quake survivors

Survivors of the earthquake in China's northwest Qinghai Province will get 500 grams of grain a day from May to July, the government announced Friday in a move to ensure food supplies in the quake zone.
Each homeless survivor without an income would also qualify for a daily allowance of 10 yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars), said a joint circular issued by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Grain (SAG).
Orphaned children, widowed elderly and disabled people could get a monthly allowance of 600 yuan. The allowance would come from a 200-million-yuan fund earmarked by the central government for relief efforts, said the circular released on the MCA website.
About 135 tonnes of grain and 16 tonnes of edible oil had been sent to Qinghai Thursday, the SAG said in a statement on its website.
Local authorities must grant sufficient subsidies and food to survivors timely, said the circular.
The Ministry of Commerce Friday called for greater efforts from local authorities to resume operations of existing businesses or set up interim business outlets to guarantee quake victims' daily necessities.
