Founded in 1851, the University of Manchester is a public research university located in Manchester, England. It was formed in October 2004 from the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
As the U.K.'s largest single-site university, Manchester has more than 37,000 students and 4,300 academic and research staff. It offers over 500 undergraduate programs across the full range of academic disciplines.
The university has a rich academic heritage with more than 25 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students, the third highest number of any single university in the U.K. (after Cambridge and Oxford).
