The 110-year-old Nanjing Normal University has a history that can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal Institute established by Zhang Zhidong, Governor-General of Jiangsu and Jiangxi, in 1902, and Huiwen Academy established in 1888. After being renamed several times and undergoing a number of mergers, the university assumed its current name in 1984.
The university, with three campuses at Xianlin, Suiyuan and Zijin, boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the East, covering a total area of 220 hectares. It offers 80 undergraduate programs, 199 master's programs and 130 doctoral programs in its 24 schools and two other individual schools. The university has 3,293 faculty members, 1,324 of whom are associate professors or above, including an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Currently, more than 24,000 full-time students are enrolled at the university, in addition to more than 6,700 continuing education students and 1,200 foreign students.
The university has established cooperative relations with 144 universities in 28 countries and regions. It has also established three Confucius Schools: Two in the US, at North Carolina State University and Pace University and another in France's Alsace region.
