Located in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, Northeast Normal University has two campuses, covering an area of 167 hectares. Its predecessor is the Northeast University founded in Benxi, Liaoning Province, in February, 1946. The school was renamed Northeast Normal University in 1950.
In its 22 schools, the university offers 56 undergraduate programs, 151 master's programs, and 111 doctoral programs, and there are 12 post-doctoral R&D centers. Currently, among all of the 24,567 enrolled full-time students, there are 14,365 undergraduates, 9,478 master's and Ph.D. students, and 724 foreign students. The teaching faculty boasts as many as 1,472 full-time teachers, including 381 professors and 462 associate professors. Since 2000, 635 foreign professionals have been invited to teach at the university.
The university has established cooperative relations with 227 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions including the US, Canada, Japan, UK, South Korea, Australia and Russia. Confucius schools have been built by the university at Dong-A University, South Korea, the University of Valencia, Spain, the University of Alaska Anchorage, US, and Seneca College, Canada. The university also established a Confucius Classroom at the National University of Mongolia.
