      Shanghai Ready for APEC
      The host metropolis is prepared and counting down the days to next week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, according to Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi. More than 10,000 English-speaking volunteers will assist guests, most of whom will be housed in some 20 four- and five-star hotels, as they participate in the meetings of the international forum.
      Hopes for Afghan Coalition Expressed
      It would be beneficial to the Afghan people and conducive to regional peace and stability if an Afghan coalition government could be established that was acceptable to all parties and able to cooperate with neighboring countries in a friendly manner, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi on October 11.
      China Closes Border With Afghanistan
      China has temporarily closed its border with Afghanistan, following the recent US air strikes. The measure was taken on Monday, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi, who added that Taxkorgan -- where China borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan -- has been sealed for all foreigners, including travellers and journalists. Sun made the statement yesterday at a regularly scheduled press conference in Beijing.
      Chinese Envoy Calls for New Concept of International Security
      Hu Xiaodi, ambassador for Disarmament Affairs of China, in a speech Tuesday at the First Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York called for a new concept of security based on international cooperation. "The terrorist attacks in the U.S. have once again highlighted the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding world peace and the security of countries," Hu said.
      President Jiang Urges Taiwan to Accept One-China Principle
      President Jiang Zemin called on the Taiwan authorities Tuesday to put the national interest first, go with the tide of history and unequivocally accept the one-China principle. Jiang made the remarks at a grand meeting held in Beijing in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Revolution of 1911 led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
      Chinese President Meets GE Chairman
      Meeting with Jeff Immelt, chairman of General Electric (GE), President Jiang Zemin on Monday afternoon said that China and the United States share wide-ranging and important common interests. Jiang also said China is ready to work alongside the US to develop constructive cooperative relations which will benefit both countries.
      Chinese, US Presidents Talk Over Phone
      Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President George W. Bush talked over the phone on Monday night as previously arranged. President Jiang thanked Bush for the call, and he reiterated that the Chinese government has always been opposed to all types of terrorism. China backs related resolutions passed respectively by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations and supports anti-terrorism activities. The Chinese side is willing to work together with the US side to reinforce exchanges and cooperation, and make efforts to protect the world's peace, stability and development, Jiang said.
