      New Program to Promote Ethnic Education
      The Ministry of Education announced yesterday that it would build more schools and train more teachers to boost education in areas inhabited by China's ethnic minorities.
      Government to Spend US$42 Billion on Railway Construction
      China will spend 350 billion yuan (US$42.3 billion) on railway construction during the current 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-05), in a bid to reach the international level at the end of the 20th century, and then to catch up with the advanced level in some key railway sectors by 2015, said Vice Minister of Railways Cai Qinghua.
      Floods Kill 200, Affect 30 Million
      At least 205 persons have died and 30 million people have been affected by heavy rain and severe flooding in five provincial areas of China since early June, civil affairs officials said Wednesday. The five affected provincial areas are Shaanxi Province in northwest China, Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality and Guizhou Province in southwest China, and Hubei Province in central China.
      Chinese, Estonian Presidents Hold Talks
      Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Wednesday in Tallinn that China is ready to work with Estonia in a joint effort to promote bilateral cooperation to a higher level. Jiang said that the two countries can have further cooperation in areas of transportation, information industry, fishing industry and timber processing.
      Army Sets Up Special Flood-fighting Units
      The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has formed 19 special units to fight floods in case of emergency. The special units consist of engineering troops who are armed with advanced technology and equipment.
      Flooding Toll: 300 Dead or Missing
      At least 26 people have died and 282 were still missing Tuesday as a result of flooding in southern parts of Shaanxi Province in northwest China. In Shanning County, the flooding has claimed 24 lives since last weekend, with another 174 people still missing.
      China's No 1 Stock Scandal Case Heard
      The largest price manipulation case in China, involving more than 5.4 billion yuan (US$653 million) of funds gathered from more than 100 companies and individuals was Tuesday heard by Beijing's No 2 Intermediate People's Court.
      China Posts Record Industrial Growth in May
      Propelled by a strong rally in manufacturing and exports, China's industrial output for May posted its highest monthly growth for the past 53 months. The National Bureau of Statistics announced on Tuesday that industrial output for May was worth a total of 261.7 billion yuan (US$31.53 billion), a rise of 12.9 percent over a year ago.
      China, Latvia to Develop Long-term Stable Relations
      Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his Latvian counterpart yesterday pledged to consolidate bilateral relations by enhancing mutual understanding and promoting reciprocal cooperation.       Tens of millions of farmers in China have obtained cheap, mortgage-free loans from the country's only national credit union network, taking advantage of a credit rating system much faster than urban residents. Dai Xianglong, governor of the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, said that approximately 40 percent of farmers in 10 major grain-producing provinces borrowed money from the government-subsidized financial institution for farming, thanks to the newly created credit rating system.

      A colossal Olympic design summit is slated to be held in Beijing early next month. The summit will be devoted to polishing the international image of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and it also marks the start of the design competitions for the Olympic logo to be used for the 2008 Games.
