"Solid Water" Invented for Planting in Deserts
Chinese scientists have developed a kind of "solid water" that can be used for planting trees in deserts. Ninety-seven percent of the "solid water" is actual water, while the rest 3 percent is a kind of macromolecular polymer extracted from animals and plants, according to Dr. Wu Yunxiang, a researcher from the Shenyang Senlu Solid Water Company.

World Bank President to Visit China May 23-30
World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn will visit China at the invitation of the government of the People's Republic of China, from May 23 through 30. The purpose of his visit is to assess recent economic developments and discuss with senior leaders the World Bank Group's assistance strategy for China after its accession to the WTO. The World Bank president also will participate in a ceremony for China to join the Development Gateway Foundation as a founding member and also for the launch of the China Development Gateway.

Floods on China's largest river, the Yangtze River, have arrived a month earlier than normal, because of continuous rainfall over the past month in the middle and lower reaches of the river. Photos Bring Back Life of Old Beijing
Some 85 black and white images of old Beijing in the 1930s-40s by the photographer Hedda Morrison (1908-91) from the collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia are on display at the Art Museum of the China Millennium Monument in Beijing. "It is the first time in more than 50 years that these photographs are exhibited in the city that they chronicle, fulfilling a long-held wish of Hedda Morrison and her husband Alastair to share the photographs with the people of Beijing," remarked Claire Roberts, senior curator of Asian Decorative Arts and Design of the Powerhouse Museum.
